The sun had slowly begun to set over a peaceful little neighborhood, and walking down the street were two kids, Josh and Olivia. Both of them were very close friend, and loved playing together and spending time with one another. And right now, they were on their way back home after spending a fun day playing at the park.

Olivia: "Thanks again for taking me to the park today Josh."

Olivia cheerfully thanked Josh.

Olivia: "It was so much fun today."

Josh smiled.

Josh:"Your welcome Olivia. I figured today was nice enough to spend the day there anyway. It's too bad that the ice cream man didn't have any Dino-Shaped ice lollies in stock today."

Olivia: "Maybe the stick went extinct."

Olivia joked, chuckling a little.

Josh rolled his eyes, still smiling.

Josh: "Very funny Olivia.. I'm sure they'll have more of them next time."

As Josh looked up at sky, he can see the sun nearly gone and the sky was getting very dark quick.

Josh: "It's getting late, we better get home. Can't let our Mum's worry about us."

The young 10 year old looked around and saw a cemetery just next to them, and remembered that it had a connection leading to his and Olivia's street where they lived, that would surely save them time and get them home a lot quicker.

Josh: "Let's cross through the cemetery, it'll get us home a lot quicker."

Josh turned and walked to the graveyard, but stopped as he noticed Olivia standing right where she was, looking a bit nervous.

Josh: "What's the matter?"

Josh asked her.

Olivia: "I don't know if we should go in there Josh, Graveyards are very spooky at night. There's no telling what could happen in them."

Olivia replied.

Olivia: "Plus my Mum told me about how this graveyard is cursed."

Josh: "Cursed?"

A curious Josh questioned, raising an eyebrow.

Olivia nodded,

Olivia: "Yeah... She's not exactly sure how it happened entirely, but it says that all living beings who wonder through the graveyard at night shall awaken the undead and shall be forced into eternal slumber by being dragged underground..."

As she said that, she felt her legs shaking in fright.

Olivia: "That's why I'm scared Josh. What if that curse happens... And we get dragged to our doom by zombies!?..."

Josh could tell how frightened and nervous Olivia was at the moment, so comforting her real close. He told her,

Josh: "Don't worry Olivia. I'm here for you. Now look I'm not so sure about this curse being real and all. But if anything every did happen to you while I'm around, I would make sure to stop it and keep you safe. That's what friends are for."

Though still a little nervous, Olivia make a little smile. Feeling a little better hearing Josh say that.

Olivia: "Thank you."

So, considering it was close to dark. And assuring that he would protect her, both Josh and Olivia tuck a deep breath and made their way into the abandoned cemetery, as they walked through the dark, and creepy area. Olivia looked around at all the tombstones around, with most of them cracked, or broken up badly. The winds slowly began to howl through the lifeless trees, as Olivia held close to Josh. Keeping close, so he would protect her like he promised.

As they walked, little did they realize that various grave sites began to glow a dark, green like colour, as moans could be heard from within the ground. And in an instant, an arm of an zombie shot up from the grave, as if brought to life by magic.

Of course Josh and Olivia hadn't noticed it yet as the two continued down the graveyard. As Josh spoke up,

Josh: "We're almost there Olivia, I can see the gates not too far from here."

Olivia felt a bit better hearing they were almost out, she thought that they would be okay. And there really was no curse inflicted upon the graveyard after all. Suddenly, she tumbled to the ground. Had she accidentally tripped on something? It didn't look that way as she was suddenly being pulled back. It felt like something was grabbing her by the leg.

Turning her head ever so slowly, she saw a green arm sticking out of the ground and it had a hold of her ankle and was being trying to pull her , and she heard a deep scary voice groaning..

Zombie: "Come down!"

Then another hand popped out of the ground and grabbed Olivia's other ankle.

Zombie 2: "Come down with us!"

Olivia * Scrams* "Josh help!"

Josh, having heard the scream. Now realized that Olivia wasn't by his side, instead he turned and saw her struggling near by with zombie hands around her ankles and trying to get away from them.

Josh: "OLIVIA! I'm coming"

Josh shouted in horror and began to run over to Olivia.

Olivia: "Josh, Please do something! I don't want to die!"

Olivia pleaded, completely scared for her life and tears of fear pooling up in her eyes.

Josh: "Hang on, I'm coming! I'll save you!"

Josh was about to go and rescue Olivia, when all of a sudden, more green boney fingered zombie arms emerged from under the ground and grabbed hold of both Josh's legs, dragging him to the ground too. As he too was now being pulled into an open grave.

Josh: "Hey, let.. go!"

Josh said, trying to pull himself free from the Zombie's grip on his legs.

Zombies in unison : "Come down with us!"

But it was no use, those Zombies had a very tight grip and it seemed like both Josh and Olivia were going to be dragged into an early eternal slumber. But Josh refused to give up, he had to find a way to free himself, and save Olivia as well. That's when he saw a tree branch nearby.
It seemed like his only chance as he desperately made a reach and grabs hold of the branch, then pulls hard with all his might, pulling himself forward to try and break free of the zombie's grip. The Zombies continued to pull him in harder as well.

Zombie: Come down come down with us you can't escape!"

Josh: "Your not going to drag me below... not today! Not... NEVER!"

In a sudden instant, Josh managed to pull himself free and hung from the tree branch, but noticed his feet felt slightly cold. He looked down and saw he was now barefoot. Due to the tight grip from the zombies. His shoes, and his socks had been pulled off as he'd pulled himself out of their gip. The now barefoot Josh then swung and let go of the branch and jumped away from the zombie hands still clutching his shoes and socks, and his bare feet landed onto the soft grass.  But Josh had no time to worry about losing his foot ware and dashed over to where Olivia was.

He looked to see that she was now lying flat on her stomach with 6 hands tucking at her!Time was running out.

Olivia: "Please... don't pull me under... I have so much to live for. I'm only 10!.."

Olivia pleaded with the Zombies, but to no avail.

Josh: "Olivia!"

The frightened girl looked up as she felt her arms and hands being grabbed by Josh as he pulled the hand off arms and said.

Josh: "I won't let them take you below, hold on tight!"

Like he did before, Josh pulled with all his might, trying to free Olivia from the Zombie's grip on her ankles.

The Zombies began to pull back hard too, grabbing hold of Olivia's feet for extra leverage and started to pull hard too. It felt like a tug-of-war at this point, with the rope being Olivia.

She really hoped for Josh to save her, as she quietly prayed to herself, hoping for a miracle right now.

Josh, starting to pull backwards, planting his bare-feet deep into the grassy ground, as he pulled really hard. Suddenly, he felt Olivia slightly being pulled towards him, the grip on the Zombie was weakening. Soon enough, with one big pull, Olivia managed to find herself flying into Josh, knocking the both of them to the ground.

Olivia looked behind her, and noticed that she was now barefoot too. Due to the Zombies ending up pulling her sandals off as she was released from their grip, but she didn't care. She was just glad to have been saved from being dragged to her doom.

Olivia: "Josh, you saved me."

Olivia hugged Josh close.

Olivia: "Oh thank you!."

Josh smiled as he hugged her in close, though this didn't last long as both kids heard the sound of moaning Zombies, as they came up out of the ground all together now. They were hideous green skinned, rotting, boney and wearing tattered clothes. The curse was kicking in big time.

Josh: "Come on, we got to get the heck out of here!"

Olivia couldn't agree with him more as the now two barefoot kids made a run for it as they ran past the various graves, with arms and Zombies emerging from them at a slow pace. They were all trying to grab and drag the kids to their eternal slumber. Soon enough, they see they were near the end of the gate. But there were a bunch of Zombies starting to block the path.

Olivia: "Oh no, they're trying to trap us in."

Olivia said in distress.

Josh then saw a tall tomb stone that was near the metal fence near the end of the graveyard, and gave him an idea.

Josh: "Not unless we make a jump for it."

Josh said as he climbed on top of the big tall tombstone.

Josh: "Climb on top of this big tombstone and then my back Olivia!"

Olivia could see what Josh was planning as she did as she was told and climbed onto the tombstone and Josh's back, as he began to run faster. Then at just the right moment, made a depth-defying jump off the tombstone as he and Olivia soar through the air, and actually flew over the Zombies that barely missed the kids and over the metal fence, and managed to exit the cemetery. Josh made a landing on the road, his bare-feet touching onto the paved road.

The two kids looked back as they saw the Zombies now moaning in despair, watching them being dragged back to their graves till they were buried completely again, and the greenish glow died down. Looks like the curse has worn off now that there were no mortals wondering the graveyard now. Josh and Olivia sighed in relief, they were safe.

Olivia: "Phew! Thank goodness that's we're both safe.

Josh:  "Yeah... That was a close one. "You okay Olivia?"

She nodded in approval.

Olivia: " Apart from losing my shoes I'm fine, thanks."

As she climbed off Josh's back, she looked at Josh's bare feet.

Olivia: "I see you lost your shoes too."

Josh blushed a bit.

Josh: "Yeah they got pulled off by the zombies too back there..."

He replied, as the two giggled a little. Soon enough the two barefoot kids proceed to head down their street as Josh takes Olivia to the front door of her house.

Olivia:"Boy.. What a wild moment that was back there..."

Olivia said.

Olivia: "Thanks again for saving me."

Josh: "Your welcome, like I said, I'm here to protect you always."

Josh replied.

Josh: "But... I think we can both agree on this. From now on, let's not take anymore shortcuts through spooky places like that cursed graveyard. If we do we might lose more then our shoes...."

Olivia nods in agreement as she opened the door.

Olivia: "Right. Well... Goodnight Josh."

She said, wiggling her toes a little.

Josh saw her wiggling toes, and blushed a little. He didn't like wiggling his own toes nor did he really like being barefoot, but in this case it couldn't be helped. Though he did tell Olivia in response.

Josh: "Night Olivia."

With that Olivia closes the door as Josh makes his way back to his house.

As he walked home, he thought back at what just happened back there in the graveyard. He felt very nervous and scared when those Zombies came out and tried to take him and Olivia to the ground below. But he felt very proud being brave to save them both, as he looked down at his barefeet. They were a bit dirty from the walk home and his toes were chilly.

And felt rather silly and embarrassed walking down a street with no shoes on , and wondered how he'd explain this to his mum, and his twin bother Tom and little sister Meg. But it was worth it as he'd saved Olivia. And he'd learned a valuable lesson from all this, next time he decides to take a shortcut. Either he does it early in the day, or don't take one at all that is cursed. But regardless, this was truly a moment of their lives both Josh and Olivia will never forget.

The End
This is a mini fic :iconanimationranking01: did for me though I've made a few personal alterations and corrections.

Anyway kid Josh and Olivia decided to take a shortcut home though a graveyard. Little do they know that it's cursed!
And it costs them both their shoes and in Josh's case socks.

This is based off part of a Goosebumps book called shocker on shock street.
